John

Chapter 1

¶1. In the beginning, the Word was there, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2. He was in the beginning with God.

3. All things were created through him, and without him was nothing created that was created.

4. In him was life, and the life was the light of men,

5. and the light is shining in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

6. There was a man sent from God whose name was John.

7. He came as a witness, to bear witness of the light so that through him, all men might believe.

8. He was not that light; rather, he came to bear witness of the light.

9. This was the true light, which sheds light on every man when he comes into the world.

10. He was in the world, and the world was created through him, but the world did not know him.

11. He came to his own things, and his own people did not receive him,

12. but as many as did receive him, to them he granted the right to become children of God, to those who believe on his name,

13. who are born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

14. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, glory as from a father to an only son, full of grace and truth.

15. John bore witness of him and cried out, saying, “This was the man of whom I said, ‘After me comes the one who is higher than I, for he was before I was.’”

16. And of his fullness have we all received, and grace upon grace.

17. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

18. No one has ever understood God; the unique Son who is next to the Father[1] has made Him known.

¶19. And this is John’s testimony when the Jews[2] sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”

20. And he confessed, and did not deny it, but confessed, “I am not the Messiah.”

21. And they asked him, “What, then? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” And he answered, “No.”

22. So they said to him, “Who are you, that we might give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?”

23. He said, “I am ‘a voice crying in the wilderness, “Prepare the way of the Lord,”’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”

24. (Now those who were sent were of the Pharisees.)

25. And they questioned him and said to him, “Why, then, are you baptizing if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?”

26. John answered them, saying, “I am baptizing with water, but in your midst stands one whom you do not know.

27. He is the one coming after me who is higher than I, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to loosen.”

28. These things took place in Bethany, beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

¶29. The next day, he saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world!

30. This is the one of whom I said, ‘After me is coming a man who is higher than I, for he was before I was.’

31. I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water is so that he might be made known to Israel.”

32. And John testified, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven in the form of a dove, and it remained on him.

33. And I did not know him, but the One who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘Upon whomever you see the Spirit descend and remain on him, he is the one who baptizes with holy Spirit.’

34. And I have seen, and I have testified that this is the Son of God!”

¶35. The next day John was again standing with two of his disciples,

36. and seeing Jesus as he walked by, he said, “Behold! The Lamb of God!”

37. His two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.

38. When Jesus turned and noticed them following, he said to them, “What are you looking for?” And they said to him, “Rabbi (which, when translated, means ‘Teacher’), where are you staying?”

39. He said to them, “Come on and see.” So they went, and they saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about the tenth hour.[3]

40. Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and then followed him.

41. He found his brother Simon first and told him, “We’ve found the Messiah (which is translated, ‘Christ’[4])!”

42. Then he led him to Jesus. When Jesus saw him, he said, “You’re Simon, the son of Jonah. You’ll be called Cephas (which means ‘Peter’[5]).”

¶43. The next day, Jesus wanted to depart into Galilee, and he found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.”

44. (Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.)

45. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found the one Moses and the prophets wrote about in the law, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

46. But Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip told him, “Come and see.”

47. Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold! A real Israelite, in whom is no guile!”

48. Nathanael said to him, “Where do you know me from?” Jesus answered him and said, “Before Philip called you, I saw you when you were under the fig tree.”

49. Nathanael answered and said to him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”

50. Jesus answered and said to him, “Do you believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You’ll see greater things than these.”

51. And then he said to him, “Truly, truly, I tell you, hereafter you’ll see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.”

¶1. On the third day, there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there,

2. and Jesus was also called to the wedding, and his disciples.

3. And when the wine ran out, Jesus’ mother told him, “They have no wine.”

4. Jesus said to her, “What do I have to do with you, woman? My hour hasn’t yet come.”

5. His mother said to the servers, “Whatever he tells you, do it.”

6. Now, there were six stone water jars standing there, according to the Jews’ custom of purification, each one able to hold two or three measures.[6]

7. Jesus said to them, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them to the brim.

8. Then he said to them, “Now, draw out some and carry it to the head steward.” And they took it.

9. Then, when the head steward tasted the water that had been turned into wine, not knowing where it came from (though the servers who had drawn the water knew), the head steward called out to the bridegroom

10. and said to him, “Every man sets out the good wine first, and when they are drunk, then the inferior, but you have kept the good wine until now!”

11. This, the beginning of miracles, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee, and he manifested his glory, and his disciples believed in him.

¶12. After this, he went down to Capernaum, he and his mother, and his brothers, and his disciples, but they did not stay there many days.

¶13. And the Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

14. And he found in the temple men selling cattle and sheep and doves, and the money-changers seated.

15. And when he had made a whip out of ropes, he drove them all out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle, and he poured out the money-changers’ money and overturned the tables,

16. and told those who sold the doves, “Get these things out of here! Don’t make my Father’s house a marketplace!”

17. Then his disciples remembered that it is written, “Zeal for your house shall eat me up.”

18. So the Jews answered and said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?”

19. Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I’ll raise it up.”

20. Then said the Jews, “For forty-six years was this temple under construction, and you will raise it up in three days?”

21. But he was talking about the temple of his body.

22. And when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus spoke.

¶23. While he was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in his name, seeing his miracles that he performed.

24. But as for Jesus, he did not trust himself to them because he knows all men,

25. and because he had no need for anyone to testify about man, for he knew what was in man.

¶1. Now, there was a man of the Pharisees whose name was Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.

2. He came to him by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no man can do these miracles that you are doing except God be with him.”

3. Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I tell you, unless a man is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

4. Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter his mother’s womb a second time and be born, can he?”

5. Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I tell you, unless a man be born of water and of spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

6. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit.

7. Don’t marvel that I told you, ‘You must be born again.’

8. The wind blows wherever it will, and you hear its sound, but you don’t know where it’s coming from or where it’s going. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

9. Nicodemus answered and said to him, “How can these things be?”

10. Jesus answered and said to him, “You’re a teacher of Israel, and you don’t understand these things?

11. Truly, truly, I tell you that what we know we speak, and what we’ve seen we testify to, and you’re not receiving our testimony.

12. If I have spoken earthly things to you, and you don’t believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?

13. No one has ascended into heaven except the one who came down from heaven (the Son of man, who is in heaven).

14. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of man be lifted up,

15. that everyone who believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

¶16. For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son so that every one who believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

17. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.

18. He who believes in him is not condemned, but he who does not believe has been condemned already because he has not believed in the name of the unique Son of God.

19. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light because their deeds were evil.

20. For everyone who practices evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds be exposed.

21. But he who does the truth comes to the light so that his deeds may be made manifest, that they have been wrought in God.

¶22. After these things, Jesus went with his disciples into the land of Judea, and he spent some time with them there and was baptizing.

23. And John was also baptizing in Aenon, near Salim, because there was much water there, and people were coming and being baptized,

24. for John was not yet thrown into prison.

25. Now, there arose a controversy between some of John’s disciples and a Jew concerning purification.

26. And so, they came to John and told him, “Rabbi, he who was with you on the other side of Jordan, to whom you have borne witness — behold, he is baptizing, and everybody is going to him!”

27. John answered and said, “A man can receive nothing unless it be given to him from heaven.

28. You yourselves are witnesses that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah,’ only that ‘I am sent before him.’

29. The one who has the bride is the bridegroom; still, the friend of the bridegroom who stands and listens for him rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore, this joy of mine is full.

30. He must increase, and I must decrease.”

¶31. He who comes from above is above all; he who is from the earth is of the earth, and he speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all.

32. And what he has seen and heard, he bears witness to it, and no one is receiving his witness.

33. The one who receives his witness has set his seal that God is true.

34. He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the Spirit by measure.

35. The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand.

36. He who believes in the Son has eternal life, but he who disobeys the Son shall not see life; on the contrary, the wrath of God abides upon him.

1. Now, when the Lord found out that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John

2. (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but his disciples),

3. he left Judea and went into Galilee,

4. and he had to pass through Samaria.

5. So he came to a city of Samaria called Sychar, close to the field which Jacob gave to Joseph his son,

6. and Jacob’s well was there. And Jesus, wearied from the journey, sat down on the well. It was about the sixth hour.[7]

7. A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink,”

8. for his disciples had gone into the city to buy food.

9. So then, the Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, being a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)

10. Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”

11. The woman said to him, “Sir, you don’t even have a bucket, and the well’s deep. Where, then, do you get that living water?

12. Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this well and drank of it himself, and his sons and his cattle?”

13. Jesus answered and said to her, “Everybody who drinks this water will get thirsty again,

14. but if anyone drinks the water that I’ll give him, he’ll never thirst again. No, the water that I’ll give him will become within him a fountain of water springing up into eternal life.”

15. The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I won’t get thirsty or come to this place to draw.”

16. Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”

17. The woman answered and said, “I don’t have a husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I don’t have a husband,’

18. for you’ve had five husbands, and the one you have now isn’t your husband. You said that right.”

19. The woman said to him, “Sir, I see that you are a prophet.

20. Our fathers worshipped in this mountain, but you, you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people have to worship.”

21. Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, an hour is coming when you’ll worship the Father neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem.

22. You Samaritans don’t know what you’re worshipping; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews.

23. But an hour is coming, and is here already, when true worshippers will worship the Father spiritually and truly, for the Father is searching for such people to worship Him.

24. God is a spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth.”

25. The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (who is called, ‘Christ’); when he comes, he’ll tell us all things.”

26. Jesus said to her, “I, the one talking with you, am the Messiah.”

¶27. And upon this, his disciples came, and they were surprised that he was talking with a woman. Nevertheless, no one said, “What are you after?” or “Why are you talking with her?”

28. Then the woman left her water pot and went to the city, and she told the men,

29. “Come! See a man who told me everything I ever did! Isn’t this the Messiah?”

30. They went out of the city and came to him.

31. In the meantime, his disciples kept asking him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.”

32. But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you don’t know about.”

33. At this, the disciples began saying to one another, “Has anybody brought him something to eat?”

34. Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent me and to finish His work.

35. Don’t you say, ‘There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest?’ Behold! I tell you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are white for the harvest already.

36. He who reaps receives wages and gathers fruit unto eternal life, so that both the sower and the reaper may rejoice together.

37. For in this, the saying is true: ‘One is the sower, and another one, the reaper.’

38. I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.”

¶39. Many among the Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the report of the woman testifying, “He told me everything I ever did!”

40. So, when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days.

41. And many more believed because of his word,

42. and then they said to the woman, “We no longer believe because of what you said. We have heard for ourselves, and we know that this really is the Savior of the world, the Messiah.”

¶43. After the two days, he left there and went to Galilee.

44. For Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.

45. So, when he came into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all the things he did in Jerusalem during the feast, for they also went to the feast.

¶46. Then Jesus went again to Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son was sick in Capernaum.

47. When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, for he was about to die.

48. Then Jesus said to him, “Unless you see signs and miracles, you won’t ever believe!”

49. The official said to him, “Sir, do come down before my child dies!”

50. Jesus said to him, “Go! Your son lives.” And the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and left.

51. And as he was going down, his servants met him, and they brought a report, saying, “Your child lives!”

52. Then he inquired of them the hour in which he had improved. And they said to him, “The fever left him yesterday at the seventh hour.” [8]

53. And the father knew that was the hour when Jesus said to him, “Your son lives,” and he and his entire household believed.

54. This is another, the second, miracle Jesus performed after he came out of Judea into Galilee.

¶1. After these things, there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

¶2. Now, in Jerusalem by the sheep gate, there is a pool, which in Hebrew is called “Bethesda”, having five porticos.

3. In these porticos lay a great multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, and paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water.

4. For from time to time, an angel came down to the pool and stirred up the water. Then, the one who went in first after the stirring of the water was cured of whatever disease that bound him.

5. Now a certain man was there who had suffered with an infirmity thirty-eight years.

6. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be well?”

7. The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred, but while I am going, another goes down ahead of me.”

8. Jesus said to him, “Get up! Take your pallet, and walk!”

9. And immediately, the man was made well, and he took up his pallet and walked. But that day was a Sabbath.

¶10. Therefore, the Jews said to the man who was healed, “It is a Sabbath! It is not lawful for you to pick up a bed.”

11. He answered them, “The one who made me well, he said to me, ‘Take up your bed and walk.’”

12. So then they asked him, “Who is the man who told you, ‘Take up your bed and walk?’”

13. But the healed man did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a crowd being in that place.

14. Later, Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “Behold, you have been healed. Sin no more, lest something worse happen to you.”

15. The man went away and reported to the Jews that Jesus was the one who made him well.

16. And this is why the Jews began persecuting Jesus, and sought to kill him, because he kept doing these things on the Sabbath.

17. But Jesus answered them, “Up until now, my Father is working, and so, I work.”

18. Because of this, then, the Jews wanted all the more to kill him, for not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was also calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

¶19. So, Jesus answered and said to them, “Truly, truly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing of himself, but only what he sees the Father do, for whatever things He does, these things the Son also does, in the same way.

20. For the Father delights in the Son, and He is showing him everything that He is doing, and greater works than these will He show him, so that you will marvel.

21. For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will.

22. The Father doesn’t even judge anyone, but has committed all judgment to the Son,

23. so that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.

24. Truly, truly, I tell you that he who hears my word and trusts in Him who sent me has eternal life and isn’t headed toward damnation, but has passed from death into life.

25. Truly, truly, I tell you that an hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear shall live.

26. For just as the Father has life in Himself, so He has also given to the Son to have life in himself,

27. and He has also given him authority to execute judgment because he is a son of man.

28. Don’t marvel at this, for an hour is coming in which all who are in the tombs shall hear his voice,

29. and they shall come out, those who did good things unto the resurrection of life, but those who did bad things unto the resurrection of damnation.

¶30. “Of myself, I can do nothing. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just because I’m not seeking my own will but the will of the Father who sent me.

31. If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true.

32. There’s another who testifies about me, and I know that the witness that He bears of me is true.

33. You yourselves sent to John, and he bore witness to the truth.

34. Nevertheless, I accept the testimony of no man. I’m only saying these things so that you might be saved.

35. He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing for a little while to rejoice in his light.

36. But I have a testimony greater than John. For the works that my Father gave me to finish — the very works that I’m doing — bear witness of me, that the Father has sent me.

37. And the Father who sent me has Himself borne me witness. You’ve never heard His voice nor seen His form.

38. And you don’t have His word abiding in you, the proof being that you don’t believe the one that He sent.

39. You search the scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life, but those scriptures are they which testify of me,

40. but you don’t want to come to me, that you might have life!

41. I don’t accept honor from humans,

42. and I know you, that you don’t have the love of God in you.

43. I have come in my Father’s name, and you don’t receive me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive.

44. How can you believe while receiving honor from one another and not seeking the honor that comes from God alone?

45. Don’t think that I will accuse you to the Father; the one who is accusing you is Moses, in whom you hope.

46. If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.

47. And if you don’t believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”

¶1. After these things, Jesus went away, across the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias.

2. And a large multitude followed him because they had seen the miracles which he performed on the sick.

3. But Jesus went up on the mountain and sat there with his disciples.

4. (Now, the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand.)

5. Then Jesus lifted up his eyes, and seeing a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where will we buy bread so these might eat?”

6. But this he said testing him, for he himself knew what he was about to do.

7. Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii[9] worth of bread isn’t enough for them, even if each of them takes a little.”

8. One of his disciples, Andrew the brother of Simon Peter, said to him,

9. “There’s a little boy here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, but what are these among so many?”

10. But Jesus said, “Have the men sit down for a meal.” Now, there was much grass in that place, so the men sat down, in number about five thousand.

11. Then Jesus took the loaves, and after offering thanks, he distributed them and the fish likewise to the disciples, and the disciples to those who were seated for the meal, as much as they wanted.

12. And when they were full, he told his disciples, “Gather up the leftover pieces so that nothing be lost.”

13. So they gathered them, and they filled twelve small baskets with the broken pieces of the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten.

14. Then, when the men saw the miracle that Jesus had done, they began to say, “This really is the prophet who is coming into the world!”

15. But then, Jesus, realizing that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, withdrew to the mountain alone.

¶16. When the evening came, his disciples went down to the sea,

17. and after boarding the boat, they started across the sea toward Capernaum. Now, it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them.

18. And the sea began to rise because a strong wind was blowing.

19. Then, when they had rowed twenty-five or thirty stadia[10], they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near the boat, and they were terrified.

20. But he said to them, “It’s me! Don’t be afraid.”

21. Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and the boat was immediately at the land to which they were going.

¶22. The next day, the multitude that remained on the other side of the sea, saw that there was no other boat there except the one his disciples boarded and that Jesus had not gone in the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples went alone.

23. Nevertheless, other boats had come from Tiberias near the place where they ate the bread after the Lord offered thanks,

24. so when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, then they themselves boarded boats and came to Capernaum, looking for Jesus,.

25. And when they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?”

26. Jesus answered them and said, “Truly, truly, I tell you, you are looking for me not because you saw miracles but because you ate the loaves and were filled.

27. Don’t labor for food that perishes but for food that endures unto eternal life, which the Son of man will give you, for God, the Father, has sealed him.”

28. Then they said to him, “What should we do, that we may work the works of God?”

29. Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe on him whom He has sent.”

30. So they said to him, “Then, what sign do you do, that we might see it and believe in you? What work do you do?

31. Our fathers ate manna in the wilderness, as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”

32. Jesus therefore said to them, “Truly, truly, I tell you, Moses didn’t give you that bread from heaven, but my Father is giving you the true bread from heaven.

33. For the bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

34. Then they said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.”

35. Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me shall never hunger, and he who believes in me shall never thirst.

36. But I told you that you have seen me, and yet you don’t believe.

37. Every thing the Father gives me shall come to me, and he who comes to me, I will by no means cast out.

38. For I have come down from heaven not to do my will, but the will of Him who sent me.

39. And this is the will of the Father who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that He has given to me, but that I should raise it up in the last day.

40. And this is the will of Him who sent me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

¶41. Then the Jews started grumbling about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”

42. And they kept saying, “Isn’t this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? So, how does he say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”

43. Jesus, therefore, answered and said to them, “Don’t murmur among yourselves.

44. No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up on the last day.

45. It’s written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Everybody, then, who hears and learns from the Father comes to me —

46. not that anyone has seen the Father; only the one who is from God has seen the Father.

47. Truly, truly, I tell you, he who believes in me has eternal life.

48. I am the bread of life.

49. Your fathers ate manna in the wilderness, and they died.

50. This is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat of it and not die.

51. I, the one who came down from heaven, am the living bread. If anyone eats of this bread, he’ll live forever. And the bread that I’ll give is my flesh, which I’ll give for the life of the world.”

¶52. Then the Jews began disputing among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

53. Therefore, Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.

54. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I’ll raise him up on the last day.

55. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.

56. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him.

57. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live by the Father, so also, he who eats me shall live by me.

58. This is the bread who came down from heaven — not the way your fathers ate manna and died. He who eats this bread will live forever.”

59. These things he said while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

¶60. Then, when many of his disciples heard this, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can hear it?”

61. But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Does this offend you?

62. Then, what if you should see the Son of man ascending to where he was before?

63. It is the Spirit that gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The things that I am telling you, they are spirit, and they are life!

64. But there are some of you who don’t believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who didn’t believe and who it was who would betray him.)

65. And then he said, “This is why I have said to you that no one can come to me unless it be given to him from my Father.”

¶66. At this, many of his disciples went back to former things, and walked with him no longer.

67. Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Don’t you want to leave, too?”

68. Then Simon Peter answered him, “Master, who will we go to? You have words of eternal life.

69. And we have believed and have come to know that you are the Messiah, the Son of the living God!”

70. Jesus answered them, “Didn’t I choose you twelve, and one of you is a slanderer?”

71. He spoke of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, for he, being one of the twelve, was going to betray him.

¶1. After these things, Jesus traveled about in Galilee; he didn’t want to travel in Judea because the Jews were seeking to kill him.

2. Now, the feast of the Jews, the Feast of Tabernacles, was near.

3. So, his brothers said to him, “Leave this place and go to Judea so that your disciples may also see these works of yours that you do.

4. Nobody does anything in secret when he wants to be publicly known. Since you do these things, show yourself to the world!”

5. (For not even his brothers believed in him.)

6. Therefore, Jesus said to them, “My time hasn’t yet come, but your time is always ready.

7. The world can’t hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it, that its works are evil.

8. You go on up to this feast; I’m not yet going up to this feast because my time is not yet fulfilled.”

9. And having spoken these things to them, he remained in Galilee.

¶10. But when his brothers had gone up, then he also went up to the feast, not openly, but in secret.

11. Now, the Jews were looking for him at the feast and were saying, “Where is he?”

12. And there was a lot of hushed debate about him among the multitudes. Some were saying, “He’s a good man,” while others were saying, “No! He deceives the people.”

13. No one, though, was speaking openly about him for fear of the Jews.

¶14. When the feast was already half over, Jesus went up to the temple and began teaching.

15. And the Jews were amazed, saying, “How does this man know scriptures, not having been trained?”

16. Jesus, therefore, answered them and said, “My doctrine is not mine, but His who sent me.

17. If anyone is willing to do His will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it’s from God or if I speak on my own.

18. He who speaks on his own is seeking his own glory, but he who seeks the glory of the One who sent him, he is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

19. Didn’t Moses give you the law, and yet, not one of you is keeping the law! Why do you seek to kill me?”

20. The crowd answered and said, “You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?”

21. Jesus answered and said to them, “I did one work, and all of you are astonished.

22. This is why Moses gave you circumcision — not that it’s from Moses, but from the fathers — and on the Sabbath, you circumcise a man.

23. If a man receives circumcision on a Sabbath so that Moses’ law be not broken, are you bitter against me because I made a man entirely whole on a Sabbath?

24. Don’t judge by appearance, but judge righteous judgment!”

¶25. Then some of those from Jerusalem started saying, “Isn’t this the one they’re seeking to kill?

26. And yet, behold, he’s talking openly, and they’re saying nothing to him! Could it really be that the rulers have found out that this man really is the Messiah?

27. But yet, we know where this man’s from, but when the Messiah comes, nobody will know where he’s from.”

28. Therefore, Jesus cried out as he taught in the temple and said, “You know me, and you also know where I’m from, and I haven’t come on my own, but the One who sent me is true; Him you do not know.

29. I know Him because I am from Him; He sent me.”

30. Then they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him because his hour had not yet come.

31. But many of the people believed on him, and they were saying, “When the Messiah comes, will he do more miracles than these that this man’s done?”

32. The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things about him, and the Pharisees and chief priests sent officers to arrest him.

33. Then, Jesus said, “I’m to be with you a little while longer, and then, I’m going away to the One who sent me.

34. You will look for me, but you won’t find me, and where I am, you cannot come.”

35. Then the Jews said to each other, “Where is this man going to go, that we won’t find him? Will he go to the Dispersion among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?

36. What is this that he said: ‘You will look for me, but you won’t find me, and where I am, you cannot come?”

¶37. On the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink!

38. He who believes in me, as the scripture said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water!”

39. But he spoke this about the Spirit, which those who believed on him were going to receive, for the holy Spirit was not yet given because Jesus was not yet glorified.

40. When they heard this statement, many in the crowd started saying, “This really is the prophet!”

41. Others were saying, “This is the Messiah!” Others were saying, “The Messiah doesn’t come from Galilee, does he?

42. Doesn’t Scripture say that the Messiah is coming from the seed of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?”

43. So, there was a division among the people because of him.

44. And some of them wanted to seize him, but no one laid hands on him.

¶45. Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they asked them, “Why did you not bring him?”

46. The officers answered, “Never has a man spoken like this man.”

47. Then the Pharisees answered them, “Are you also deceived?

48. Has any one from the rulers believed in him, or from the Pharisees?

49. No! This people, who do not know the law, are accursed!”

50. Nicodemus (the one who came to him by night), being one of them, said to them,

51. “Does our law condemn the man unless it first hears from him and ascertains what he is doing?”

52. They answered and said to him, “You’re not from Galilee, too, are you? Search and see that no prophet has arisen from Galilee!”

53. Then every one went home.

1. But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

¶2. Early in the morning, he went again to the temple, and all the people began to come, and he sat down and taught them.

3. Then the scribes and Pharisees led a woman to him who had been caught in adultery, and when they had stood her in the midst,

4. they said to him, testing him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of adultery!

5. In the law, Moses commanded us that such women are to be stoned. Now then, what do you say?”

6. They were saying this to test him, so that they might have a charge to bring against him. But Jesus, stooping down, began to write on the ground with his finger, as if paying no attention.

7. Then, as they persisted in questioning him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him among you who is without sin throw the first stone at her.”

8. And stooping down again, he wrote on the ground.

9. Then, one by one, starting with the oldest, the men who heard this went out, convicted by their conscience, and Jesus was left alone, with the woman still in the midst.

10. And when Jesus stood up and saw no one except the woman, he said to her, “Where are those accusers of yours? Did no one condemn you?”

11. She said, “No one, sir.” Then Jesus said, “I don’t condemn you either. Go, and don’t sin any more.”

¶12. Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”

13. Therefore the Pharisees said to him, “You are bearing witness of yourself; your witness is not true.”

14. Jesus answered them and said, “Even if I bear witness of myself, my witness is true because I know where I came from and where I’m going, but you don’t know where I come from or where I’m going.

15. You judge after the flesh; I judge nobody.

16. And yet, if I do judge, my judgment is true because I’m not alone, but I and the Father who sent me.

17. Even in your law it is written that the testimony of two men is true.

18. I’m one who bears witness of myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness of me.”

19. Then they began to say to him, “Where is your father?” Jesus answered, “You don’t know me or my Father; if you had known me, you would have known my Father, too.”

20. These things Jesus spoke in the treasury, while teaching in the temple, and yet, no one arrested him because his hour had not yet come.

¶21. Then Jesus said to them again, “I’m going away, and you’ll look for me, but you’ll die in your sin. Where I’m going, you can’t come.”

22. Then the Jews started saying, “Maybe he’ll kill himself, since he says, ‘Where I’m going, you can’t come.’ ”

23. And he said to them, “You’re from below; I’m from above. You’re of this world; I’m not of this world.

24. That’s why I told you that you will die in your sins. For if you don’t believe that I’m the one, you’ll die in your sins.”

25. So then they said to him, “Who are you?” And Jesus said to them, “Even what I said to you from the beginning.

26. I have many things to say and to judge concerning you, but He who sent me is true, and the things I’ve heard from Him, these I speak to the world.”

27. (They did not understand that he spoke of the Father to them.)

28. Then said Jesus to them, “When you lift up the Son of man, then you’ll know that I’m the one, and I’m doing nothing on my own, but as my Father taught me, I say these things.

29. And He who sent me is with me; the Father hasn’t left me alone because I always do the things that please Him.”

30. As he was saying these things, many believed in him.

¶31. Then Jesus said to the Jews who believed in him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples,

32. and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

33. They answered him, “We are Abraham’s seed, and we have never been slaves to anyone. How can you say, ‘You shall be free’?”

34. Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I tell you that everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.

35. And the slave doesn’t remain in the house forever; the son remains forever.

36. If, then, the Son makes you free, you’ll be free indeed.

37. I know that you’re Abraham’s seed, but you are seeking to kill me because my word finds no place in you.

38. I speak what I’ve seen from my Father, and you do what you’ve seen from your father.”

39. They answered and said to him, “Our father is Abraham.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you’d do the works of Abraham.

40. But now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth which I heard from God; this, Abraham did not do.

41. You do the works of your father.” Then they said to him, “We are not born of fornication. We have one Father, God.”

42. Therefore, Jesus said to them, “If God was your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here, and I have not come on my own, but He sent me.

43. Why don’t you understand my speech? Because you cannot hear my word.

44. You are of your father, the Accuser, and you want to do the lusts of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and he has not continued in the truth because truth isn’t in him. Whenever he tells a lie, he speaks from himself because he’s a liar and the father of it.

45. And because I tell the truth, you don’t believe me.

46. Who among you convicts me of sin? And if I speak truth, why don’t you believe me?

47. He who is of God hears the words of God; the reason you don’t hear is that you are not of God.”

48. The Jews answered and said to him, “Don’t we rightly say that you’re a Samaritan, and you have a demon!”

49. Jesus answered, “I don’t have a demon! No! I honor my Father, and you dishonor me!

50. I don’t seek glory for myself; there is One who seeks and judges.

51. Truly, truly, I tell you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never, ever see death.”

52. Then the Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham and the prophets died, and you say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never, ever taste of death.’

53. Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died. Who are you making yourself out to be?”

54. Jesus answered, “If I honor myself, my honor is nothing; my Father is the one who honors me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’

55. And yet, you haven’t known Him, but I know Him. And if I say that I don’t know Him, I’ll be a liar like you! But I do know Him, and I keep His word!

56. Your father Abraham was overjoyed that he might see my day, and he saw it, and rejoiced.”

57. Then the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and you have seen Abraham?”

58. Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I tell you, before Abraham came to be, I was.”

59. At this, they took up stones to throw at him. But Jesus was hidden, and he went out of the temple, passing through their midst. And thus, he went away.

¶1. And as he went away, he saw a man blind from birth.

2. And his disciples asked him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, for him to be born blind?”

3. Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned; it happened so that the works of God might be manifested in him.

4. I must work the works of the One who sent me while it is day. The night is coming when no one can work.

5. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world!”

6. When he had said these things, he spat on the ground, and made mud from the spit, and smeared the mud on the eyes of the blind man,

7. and said to him, “Go wash in the pool of Siloam (which, translated, is ‘Sent’)”. So he went away and washed, and returned, seeing.

8. Then his neighbors and those who had seen him before, that he was blind, started saying, “Isn’t this the man who sits and begs?”

9. Some said, “This is the man.” But others, “He is like him.” But he said, “I’m the man.”

10. Then they said to him, “How were your eyes opened?”

11. He answered and said, “A man named Jesus made mud and smeared it on my eyes and told me, ‘Go to the pool of Siloam and wash!’ And when I went and washed, I could see.”

12. So they said to him, “Where is that man?” He said, “I don’t know.”

¶13. They led him who once was blind to the Pharisees.

14. (Now, it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made mud and opened his eyes.)

15. Then, again, the Pharisees also questioned him as to how he received sight. And he said to them, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.”

16. Then, some of the Pharisees began saying, “This man is not of God because he does not keep the Sabbath!” Others said, “How can a sinful man do such miracles?” And there was a division among them.

17. Again, they said to the blind man, “What do you say about him, since he opened your eyes?” And he said, “He’s a prophet.”

18. However, the Jews did not believe it about him, that he used to be blind, and then received sight. Meanwhile, they summoned the parents of him who had received sight,

19. and they questioned them, saying, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How, then, does he now see?”

20. Then his parents answered them and said, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind,

21. but how it is that he now sees, we don’t know, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. He’s of age; ask him! He’ll speak for himself.”

22. (His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone confessed him to be the Messiah, he should be expelled from the synagogue.

23. This is why his parents said, “He’s of age; ask him.”)

24. Then they summoned for the second time the man who used to be blind and said to him, “Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner.”

25. Then he answered and said, “Whether he’s a sinner, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind, and I now see.”

26. They said to him again, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”

27. He answered them, “I told you already, and you didn’t listen. Why do you want to hear it again? You don’t want to be his disciples, too, do you?”

28. They reviled him and said, “You are that man’s disciple; we are disciples of Moses!

29. We know that God spoke to Moses, but we do not know where this man is from.”

30. The man answered and said to them, “Well, this is an amazing thing, that you don’t know where he’s from, and yet he opened my eyes!

31. We know that God doesn’t hear sinners, but if anyone is God-fearing and does His will, He hears him.

32. Since the world began, it hasn’t been heard that someone opened the eyes of a man born blind.

33. If this man wasn’t of God, he couldn’t do anything!”

34. They answered and said to him, “You were altogether born in sin, and you are teaching us?” And they threw him out.

¶35. Jesus heard that they threw him out, and when he found him, he said to him, “Do you believe in the Son of God?”

36. He answered and said, “And who is he, sir, so that I can believe on him?”

37. Jesus said to him, “You have now seen him, and he is the one talking with you.”

38. Then he said, “Sir, I believe,” and he knelt down before him.

39. And Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment, so that those who don’t see might see, and those who do see might be made blind.”

40. And some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and they said to him, “We are not blind, too, are we?”

41. Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you’d have no sin, but now you say, ‘We see’; therefore, your sin remains.”

¶1. “Truly, truly, I tell you, he who doesn’t enter through the gate into the sheepfold, but climbs up at some other place, is a thief and a robber.

2. He who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.

3. The gatekeeper opens for him, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

4. And once he has driven out his sheep, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice.

5. They will never follow a stranger, but they will flee from him because they don’t know the voice of strangers.”

6. Jesus spoke this allegory to them, but they did not understand the things that he said to them.

¶7. Then again, Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I tell you that I’m the gate for the sheep.

8. All who have ever come are thieves and robbers, but the sheep didn’t hear them.

9. I’m the gate; if anyone enters through me, he’ll be saved, and he’ll come in, and go out and find pasture.

10. The thief comes only to steal, to kill, and to destroy; I am come that they might have life, and have it abundantly.

11. I’m the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

12. But the hireling, not really being a shepherd, whose sheep are not his own, sees the wolf coming and abandons the sheep and flees, and the wolf drags them off and scatters the sheep.

13. The hireling flees because he is a hireling, and it doesn’t matter to him about the sheep.

14. I’m the good shepherd; I know my own, and I am known by my own.

15. Just as the Father knows me, I also know the Father, and I lay down my life for the sheep.

16. And I have other sheep which aren’t of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will hear my voice, and there shall be one flock, and one Shepherd.

17. This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life, that I might receive it again.

18. Nobody takes it from me; I lay it down on my own. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it up again. I received this commandment from my Father.”

¶19. Then, because of these words, there arose a division among the Jews again.

20. Many of them were saying, “He is demon-possessed and deranged! Why do you listen to him?”

21. Others were saying, “These are not the words of a demon-possessed man! Can a demon open blind eyes?”

¶22. Then there came the feast of Dedication in Jerusalem, and it was winter,

23. and Jesus was walking in the temple in Solomon’s portico.

24. But then the Jews surrounded him and began to say to him, “How long are you going to hold our soul in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”

25. Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you don’t believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name, these bear witness of me,

26. but you don’t believe because you’re not my sheep, just like I told you.

27. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me,

28. and I give them eternal life, and they’ll never, ever die, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.

29. My Father who gave me all things is greater than all, and no one can snatch anything out of my Father’s hand.

30. The Father and I are one.”

31. Then, again, the Jews took up stones to stone him.

32. Jesus answered them, “I showed you many good works from my Father; for which one of them are you stoning me?”

33. The Jews answered him saying, “We’re not stoning you because of a good work, but for blasphemy, in that you, being a man, are making yourself a god.”

34. Jesus answered them, “Isn’t it written in your law, ‘I said you are gods?’

35. If He called them ‘gods’ to whom the word of God came — and the Scripture cannot be contradicted —

36. are you telling the one whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am God’s son’?

37. If I don’t do the works of my Father, don’t believe me,

38. but if I do, even if you don’t believe me, believe the works so that you may know and believe that the Father is in me, and I in him.”

39. Then, again, they tried to seize him, but he escaped out of their hand.

¶40. And he went again to the other side of Jordan to the place where John was first baptizing, and he remained there.

41. And many came to him, and they said, “Though John performed no miracle, every single thing John said about this man was true.”

42. And many there believed in him.

¶1. Now, a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.

2. (It was Mary who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)

3. So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, behold, he whom you love is sick.”

4. When Jesus heard this, he said, “This sickness is not for death, but for the glory of God, so that by it, the Son of God might be glorified.”

5. Now, Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

6. Nevertheless, when he heard that he was sick, he remained for two days in the place where he was.

7. Then, after this, he said to the disciples, “Let’s go again into Judea.”

8. The disciples said to him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just now trying to stone you, and you’re going there again?”

9. Jesus answered, “Aren’t there twelve hours in a day? If someone walks during the day, he doesn’t stumble because he sees the light of this world.

10. But if someone walks at night, he stumbles because there’s no light in him.”

11. He said these things, and then told them, “Our friend Lazarus is asleep. But I’m going to go wake him up.”

12. Then his disciples said, “Lord, if he’s sleeping, he’ll get well.”

13. Now Jesus had been speaking concerning his death, but they thought he was talking about ordinary sleep.

14. So then, Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead;

15. and I’m happy for you that I wasn’t there, so that you might believe. Now, let’s go to him.”

16. Then Thomas, who is called “Twin”, said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s go, too, that we may die with him.”

¶17. Now, when Jesus came, he found that he had already been in the tomb four days.

18. (Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia[11] from it.)

19. And many of the Jews had come to the women around Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.

20. Then, when Martha heard someone say, “Jesus is coming,” she went to meet him. But Mary stayed home.

21. And Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died;

22. still, even now, I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.”

23. Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

24. Martha said to him, “I know that in the resurrection he will rise again, in the last day.”

25. Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live even if he dies,

26. and everyone who lives and believes in me will never, ever die. Do you believe this?”

27. She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have believed that you are the Messiah, the Son of God who is coming to the world.”

28. And when she had spoken these things, she went away and discreetly summoned Mary her sister, saying, “The teacher is here, and he’s calling for you.”

29. When she heard this, she quickly got up and went to him.

30. Now, Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met him.

31. When the Jews, who were with her in the house consoling her, saw that she got up quickly and went out, they followed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there.

32. Then, when Mary came to the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”

33. When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, he groaned in spirit and was himself deeply moved,

34. and he said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Sir, come and see.”

35. Jesus wept.

36. Then the Jews began to say, “Behold, how he loved him!”

37. But some of them said, “Couldn’t this man, who opened the eyes of the blind man, have also kept this man from dying?”

38. Then Jesus, groaning in himself again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was placed on it.

39. Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the man who had died, said to him, “Lord, he already stinks, for this is the fourth day.”

40. Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?”

41. So, they took away the stone where the dead was laid. Then Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you, that you heard me.

42. And I know that you always hear me, but I said this because of the crowd that is here, so that they might believe that you sent me.”

43. And having said these things, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out here!”

44. And the man who was dead, feet and hands bound with grave clothes, and his face wrapped with a cloth, came out. Jesus said to them, “Loose him, and let him go!”

¶45. Many of the Jews, therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him.

46. But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them the things Jesus did.

¶47. The chief priests and Pharisees, therefore, convened the Sanhedrin and said, “What are we to do? This man is working many miracles.

48. If we allow him to go on like this, everyone will believe on him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”

49. Then a certain one of them, Caiaphas, the high priest at that time, said to them, “You know nothing at all;

50. neither do you understand that it is better for us that one man should die for the people, and the whole nation not perish.”

51. But this he did not say of himself, but being high priest at that time, he prophesied that Jesus was about to die for the nation

52. (and not for that nation only, but also so that the children of God who are scattered abroad might be gathered together as one).

53. So, from that day, they plotted to kill him.

¶54. Therefore, Jesus no longer walked openly among the Jews but went away from there to the region near the desert, to a city called Ephraim, and there he remained with his disciples.

55. Now, the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up out of the country to Jerusalem to purify themselves for the Passover.

56. They kept looking for Jesus, and were saying to one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? That he won’t come to the feast at all?”

57. But both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it so that they could arrest him.

¶1. Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, who had died, whom he raised from the dead.

2. So they made a supper there for him, and Martha was serving, and Lazarus was one of those who reclined at the table with him.

3. Then Mary, taking a pound[12] of very expensive perfume of pure spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair, and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

4. Then, one of his disciples, Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, who was to betray him, said,

5. “Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor!”

6. (Now, he said this not because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief, and he carried the money-bag and stole from what was put into it.)

7. Therefore, Jesus said, “Leave her alone. She has kept it for the day of my burial.

8. You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.”

¶9. Then a large crowd of Jews found out that he was there, and they came, not just because of Jesus but so they might see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.

10. But the chief priests resolved that they should also kill Lazarus,

11. for because of him, many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.

¶12. The next day, when a great multitude who had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming into Jerusalem,

13. they took branches from palm trees, and they went out to meet him, all the while crying, “Hosanna[13]! Blessed is the king of Israel, who comes in the name of the Lord!”

14. When Jesus had found a young donkey, he sat on it, just as it is written,

15. “Do not be afraid, O daughter of Zion! Behold! Your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.”

16. (His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about him and that they had done these things to him.)

17. Meanwhile, the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead was testifying about it.

18. This is also why the multitude met him, because they heard that he had performed this miracle.

19. Therefore, the Pharisees said to each other, “You see that you can do nothing. Behold, the world has gone after him!”

¶20. Now there were some Greeks among those who had come up to worship at the feast,

21. and these approached Philip, who was of Bethsaida in Galilee, and they asked him, saying, “Sir, we want to see Jesus.”

22. Philip came and told Andrew, and in turn, Andrew and Philip told Jesus.

23. And Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come that the Son of man should be glorified.

24. Truly, truly, I tell you, unless the kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains alone, but if it dies, it bears much fruit.

25. He who holds his life dear will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it forever.

26. If anyone would serve me, let him follow me, and where I am, there my servant will also be, and if anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.

27. My soul is now troubled, and yet, what should I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour.

28. Father, glorify your name!” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have both glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”

29. Then the crowd that stood by and heard it said it was thunder; others said, “An angel has spoken to him!”

30. Jesus answered and said, “This voice didn’t come for my sake but for yours.

31. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world shall be cast out.

32. And as for myself, if I am lifted up from the earth, I’ll draw all men to me.”

33. (He said this, signifying what kind of death he was about to suffer.)

34. The crowd answered him, “We heard from the law that the Messiah continues forever, so how is it that you say, ‘The Son of man must be lifted up’? Who is this ‘Son of man’?”

35. Then Jesus said to them, “The light is with you just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light so that the darkness doesn’t overtake you, for the one who walks in the darkness doesn’t know where he’s going.

36. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may be sons of light.”

¶These things Jesus said, and after he went away, he was hidden from them.

37. And although so many miracles had been done by him in their presence, they did not believe in him,

38. so that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke: “Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?”

39. This is why they could not believe, because Isaiah said again,

40. “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they should see with their eyes and understand with their heart and be converted, and I heal them.”

41. Isaiah said these things when he saw His glory and spoke about Him.

42. Nevertheless, even many of the rulers believed in him, but they would not admit it because of the Pharisees, lest they be put out of the synagogue.

43. For they loved the honor of men more than the honor of God.

¶44. Then Jesus cried out and said, “He who believes in me is not believing in me, but in Him who sent me.

45. And he who sees me sees Him who sent me.

46. I have come as a light for the world, so that every one who believes in me might not remain in the darkness.

47. And if anyone hears my words but doesn’t believe, I do not judge him, for I didn’t come to judge the world, but to save the world.

48. He who rejects me and doesn’t receive my words has his judgment; the word that I have spoken, that will judge him on the last day.

49. For I have not spoken on my own, but when the Father sent me, He Himself gave me a commandment, what I should speak and what I should say.

50. And I know that His commandment is eternal life; so, the things I say, I say just as the Father has told me.”

¶1. It was before the feast of the Passover, and knowing that the time had come for him to depart from this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, Jesus loved them until the end.

2. And when supper was made (the Accuser[14] having already put it into the heart of Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot, to betray him),

3. Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he came from God and was going to God,

4. arose from the meal and put aside his robe, and taking up a towel, he girded himself.

5. Next, he poured water into a wash basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to dry them with the towel with which he was girded.

6. Then he came to Simon Peter, but he said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?”

7. Jesus answered and said to him, “You don’t understand now what I’m doing, but later on, you’ll understand.”

8. Peter said to him, “You will never, ever wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”

9. Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not just my feet, but my hands and head, too.”

10. Jesus said to him, “The man who has taken a bath is entirely clean; he needs only to wash his feet. And you are clean, but not all of you.

11. (He knew who would betray him; this is why he said, “You are not all clean.”)

¶12. Then, when he had washed their feet, he put his garments back on, reclining again at the table, and said to them, “Do you know what I’ve done to you?

13. You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord’, and you speak rightly, for I am.

14. So, if I, Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought also to wash one another’s feet.

15. I’ve given you an example, that as I’ve done to you, you should also do.

16. Truly, truly, I tell you, a slave is not greater than his master; neither is one who is sent greater than the one who sent him.

17. Since you know these things, you’re blessed if you do them.

18. I’m not talking about all of you. I know the ones I’ve chosen, but so that the Scripture might be fulfilled, it must be that ‘He who eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against me.’

19. I’m telling you now, before it happens, so that when it happens, you might believe that I am he.

20. Truly, truly, I tell you, he who receives anyone I send receives me, and he who receives me receives the One who sent me.”

¶21. After saying these things, Jesus was deeply moved in spirit, and he testified and said, “Truly, truly, I tell you that one of you will betray me.”

22. Then, uncertain of whom he spoke, the disciples started looking at each other.

23. And there was one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, reclining close to Jesus[15],

24. Then, Simon Peter nodded to him, to inquire who it might be of whom he spoke.

25. And he, leaning back on Jesus’ chest, said to him, “Lord, who is it?”

26. Jesus answered, “It’s the one I will give this bit of bread to, after I’ve dipped it.” And when he had dipped the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon.

27. And after the piece of bread, Satan entered into him. Then Jesus said to Judas, “What you do, do quickly.”

28. Now, none of those reclining at the table understood why he said this to him.

29. Some supposed, since Judas had the money-bag, that Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the feast”, or that he should give something to the poor.

30. So, having received the piece of bread, he immediately went out. And it was night.

¶31. When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of man is glorified, and God is glorified in him.

32. If God be glorified in him, God also will glorify him in Himself, and He will straightway glorify him.

33. Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You’ll look for me, and as I told the Jews, ‘Where I’m going, you can’t come,’ I also say now to you.

34. I am giving you a new commandment, that you love one another; just as I have loved you, that you should also love one another.

35. By this, all men will know that you’re my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

¶36. Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I’m going, you can’t follow me now, but you’ll follow me later.”

37. Peter said to him, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will give my life for you.”

38. Jesus answered him, “Will you give your life for me? Truly, truly, I tell you, a rooster shall not crow until you deny me three times.”

¶1. “Don’t let your heart be troubled. You believe in God, and you believe in me.

2. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I’m going away to prepare a place for you.

3. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I am coming again and will take you to be with me, so that where I am, you may also be.

4. And you know where I’m going, and you know the way.”

5. Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you’re going. So how can we know the way?”

6. Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except by me.

7. Had you known me, you would have known my Father also. And from now on, you do know Him and have seen Him.”

8. Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it’s enough for us.”

9. Jesus said to him, “Have I spent so much time with you, and you don’t know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father. So, how is it you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

10. Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me? The things I’m saying to you, I’m not saying on my own; but the Father who lives in me, He’s doing the works.

11. Believe me, that I am in the Father and the Father in me; if not, believe me because of the works themselves.

12. Truly, truly, I tell you, he who believes in me, the works that I do, he will also do, and he will do greater works than these because I go to my Father.

13. And whatever you ask in my name, I will do it, so the Father might be glorified in the Son.

14. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.

15. If you love me, keep my commandments.

16. And I’ll ask the Father, and He’ll give you another comforter, that He might abide with you forever,

17. the Spirit of truth, which the world cannot receive because it neither sees it nor understands it. You know it because it abides with you, and it shall be in you.

18. I won’t leave you orphans; I’ll come to you.

19. Yet a little while, and the world will see me no more, but you will see me; because I live, you will live, too.

20. On that day, you’ll know for yourselves that I’m in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.

21. The one who loves me is the one who has my commandments and keeps them, and he who loves me shall be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him.”

22. Judas (not the Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, just how is it that you’re going to show yourself to us, but not to the world?”

23. Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves me, he’ll obey my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.

24. The one who doesn’t love me doesn’t obey my words, and the word that you hear isn’t mine, but the Father’s who sent me.

¶25. “I have spoken these things to you, being with you,

26. but the comforter, the holy Spirit which the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things, and will bring to your remembrance everything that I’ve told to you.

27. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I don’t give to you the way the world gives. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

28. You heard me say to you, ‘I’m leaving, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced because I said, ‘I’m going to the Father’, for my Father is greater than I.

29. And I’ve told you now, before it happens, so that when it happens, you might believe.

30. I won’t talk much with you any longer, for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in me,

31. but it must be so that the world might know that I love the Father and that I’m doing just as the Father has commanded me. Get up; let’s go from here.”

¶1. “I’m the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser.

2. He takes away every branch in me that doesn’t bear fruit, and He prunes every branch that bears fruit so that it might bear more fruit.

3. You are already clean because of the word that I’ve spoken to you.

4. Abide in me, and I in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit from itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you, unless you abide in me.

5. I am the vine; you, the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, bears much fruit, for without me, you can do nothing.

6. Unless a man abides in me, he is thrown away like a branch, and it withers, and they gather them up and throw them into a fire, and they are burned.

7. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, you will ask whatever you want, and it shall be done for you.

8. By this, my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, and then you’ll be my disciples.

9. I have loved you the same way the Father loved me; stay in my love.

10. You will stay in my love if you keep my commandments, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and stay in His love.

11. I’ve said these things to you so that my joy might remain in you and your joy may be full.

12. This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.

13. No one has greater love than this, that a man should lay down his life for his friends.

14. You are my friends if you do whatever I command you.

15. I no longer call you ‘servants’ because the servant doesn’t know what his lord is doing; instead, I’ve called you ‘friends’ because everything that I’ve heard from my Father, I’ve made known to you.

16. You haven’t chosen me, but I’ve chosen you, and I’ve appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit, and your fruit remain, so that the Father may give you whatever you ask Him in my name.

17. These things I command you, so that you love one another.

18. If the world hate you, you know that it hated me before it hated you.

19. If you were of the world, the world would befriend its own; but since you’re not of the world — on the contrary, I’ve chosen you out of the world — because of this, the world hates you.

20. Remember the statement that I made to you: ‘A servant isn’t greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they’ll also persecute you. If they obeyed my word, they’ll also obey yours.’

21. But all these things they’ll do to you because of my name, because they don’t know the One who sent me.

22. Had I not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin, but now they don’t have an excuse for their sin.

23. He who hates me, hates my Father also.

24. If I hadn’t done the works among them that no other man has done, they would have no sin, but now, they’ve seen and hated both me and my Father.

25. But this happened so that the saying written in their law might be fulfilled, ‘They hated me for no reason.’

¶26. “Now, when the Comforter comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth which comes out from the Father, he will testify of me,

27. and you also will bear witness because you’ve been with me from the beginning.”

¶1. “I’ve spoken these things to you so that you won’t be offended[16].

2. They’ll put you out of the synagogues. In fact, the hour is coming when everyone who kills you will think he’s offering God service.

3. And they’ll do these things because they haven’t known either the Father or me.

4. But I’ve said these things to you so that when the hour comes, you might remember them, that I told you. I didn’t tell you these things in the beginning because I was with you,

5. but now, I’m going away to the One who sent me, and not one of you is asking me, ‘Where are you going?’

6. But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.

7. But I tell you the truth; it is better for you that I go away, for if I don’t go away, the Comforter won’t come to you; but if I go, I’ll send him to you.

8. And when he comes, he’ll convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

9. of sin, because they don’t believe in me;

10. and of righteousness because I’m going to the Father, and you no longer see me;

11. and of judgment because the ruler of this world is judged.

12. I still have many things to tell you, but you aren’t able to bear them now.

13. But when he, the Spirit of truth, has come, he’ll guide you into all truth. For he won’t speak on his own, but whatever he hears, he’ll speak, and he’ll reveal to you things that are coming.

14. He’ll glorify me because he’ll take from what is mine and declare it to you.

15. All things that the Father has are mine; this is why I said that he takes from what is mine and will declare it to you.

16. A little while, and you won’t see me, and again, a little while and you will see me, because I’m going to the Father.”

17. Then, some of his disciples said to one another, “What’s this that he’s saying to us, ‘A little while, and you won’t see me, and again, a little while and you will see me’ and ‘because I’m going to the Father’?”

18. And they kept on saying, “What’s this that he’s saying, ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he’s saying.”

19. Then, Jesus perceived that they wanted to ask him, and he said to them, “Are you asking one another about what I said: ‘A little while, and you won’t see me, and again, a little while and you will see me’?

20. Truly, truly, I tell you that you shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice, and you’ll have sorrow, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.

21. When a woman gives birth, she has sorrow because her hour is come, but when the child is born, she no longer remembers the suffering because of joy that a man is born into the world.

22. And so, you now have sorrow, too, but I’ll see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.

23. And in that day, you will ask me nothing. Truly, truly, I tell you that whatever you ask the Father in my name, He will give you.

24. Until now, you have asked nothing in my name; ask, and you shall receive, so that your joy may be full.”

¶25. “I’ve spoken these things to you figuratively; however, the hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures, but will tell you plainly about the Father.

26. In that day, you’ll ask in my name, and I’m not telling you that I’ll ask the Father for you,

27. for the Father Himself considers you friends because you have befriended me, and you have believed that I came from God.

28. I came from the Father and have come into the world; again, I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”

29. His disciples said to him, “Behold! Now you’re talking plainly and using no figure of speech.

30. We know now that you know everything, and you have no need for anyone to question you; by this, we believe that you came from God.”

31. Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe?

32. Behold, an hour is coming, and has now come, when you’ll be scattered, each to his own house, and you’ll leave me to be alone, and yet, I’m not alone because the Father is with me.

33. I’ve spoken these things to you so that in me you might have peace. In the world, you have tribulation, but take heart; I have overcome the world.”

¶1. Jesus spoke these things, and then lifted his eyes toward heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, so that your Son might also glorify you,

2. since you have given him authority over all flesh, that he might give eternal life to all that you have given to him.

3. And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and him whom you sent, Jesus Christ.

4. I glorified you on earth; I finished the work that you gave me to do.

5. And now, Father, glorify me to be at your side with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.

6. I have manifested your name to the men whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours, and you have given them to me, and they have obeyed your word.

7. They know now that everything you’ve given me is from you

8. because I have given them the words you’ve given me, and they received them, and they truly do know that I came from you, and they have believed that you sent me.

9. I’m asking for them; I’m not asking for the world, but for those you’ve given me, for they are yours,

10. and all things that are mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I have been glorified by them.

11. And I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given to me, that they may be one, as we are.

12. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in your name; those you gave to me, I watched over, and I lost none of them except the son of destruction, that the scripture might be fulfilled.

13. And now I’m coming to you, and these things I’m saying in the world so they may have my joy, in full, within them.

14. I’ve given them your word, and the world hated them because they are not of the world, just as I’m not of the world.

15. I’m not asking that you take them out of the world but that you keep them from the evil one.

16. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.

17. Sanctify them by your truth; your word is truth.

18. Just as you sent me into the world, I also sent them into the world.

19. And for their sake, I sanctify myself so that they may also be sanctified in truth.

20. I’m not asking for these alone, but also for those who believe in me through their word,

21. that they all might be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they may also be one in us so that the world might believe that you sent me.

22. And the glory that you’ve given me, I’ve given them, that they might be one, just as we are one;

23. I in them, and you in me, so that they might be perfected in unity, and so that the world may know that you sent me, and loved them just as you loved me.

24. Father, I desire that where I am, these whom you’ve given to me might also be with me, that they may behold my glory that you gave me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.

25. Truly, righteous Father, the world doesn’t know you, but I know you, and these know that you sent me,

26. and I have made your name known to them, and I will make it known, so that the love with which you loved me may be in them, and I in them.”

¶1. After Jesus said these things, he went out with his disciples across the brook of Kidron, where there was a garden into which he and his disciples entered.

2. Now, Judas, the one who betrayed him, also knew the place because Jesus had often gathered there with his disciples.

3. So, Judas, having received a cohort, as well as officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, and torches, and weapons.

4. Then Jesus, knowing all things that were coming upon him, went out and said to them, “Who are you looking for?”

5. They answered him, “Jesus the Nazarite.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” (And Judas, the one who betrayed him, was also standing among them.)

6. And when he said to them, “I am he”, they went backward and fell to the ground.

7. So, again he asked them, “Who are you looking for?” And they said, “Jesus the Nazarite.”

8. Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. So, if you are looking for me, let these go.”

9. (That the word might be fulfilled which he spoke: “I have lost not one of those whom you have given me.”)

10. Then, Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it out and smote a servant of the high priest and took off his right ear. And the servant’s name was Malchus.

11. Then Jesus said to Peter, “Put up your sword into the sheath! Must I not drink the cup that my Father has given me?”

¶12. And so, the cohort, and the tribune, and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus, and tied him up,

13. and led him away, first to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.

14. (It was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was better for one man to perish instead of the people.)

¶15. But Simon Peter was following Jesus, as was another disciple. And that disciple was known to the high priest, and he entered with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard.

16. But Peter stood outside, by the door. So, the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in.

17. Then the servant-girl who was doorkeeper said to Peter, “Aren’t you also one of this man’s disciples?” He replied, “Not me!”

18. Now, the slaves and officers had made a fire of coals, because it was cold, and were standing around keeping themselves warm, and Peter was standing with them, warming himself, too.

¶19. Then, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his doctrine.

20. Jesus answered him, “I’ve spoken openly in the world. I taught continually in synagogue and in the temple where the Jews always come together, and I’ve said nothing in secret.

21. Why do you question me? Ask those who heard me what I said to them. Behold, they know the things I said.”

22. When he said these things, one of the officers standing by slapped Jesus in the face, saying, “Is that the way you answer the high priest?”

23. Jesus answered him, “If I spoke wrongly, testify about the wrong, but if rightly, why do you hit me?”

24. Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.

¶25. Meanwhile, Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. Then they said to him, “Aren’t you also one of his disciples?” But he denied it and said, “Not me.”

26. One of the slaves of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter cut off, said, “Didn’t I see you in the garden with him?”

27. And again, Peter denied it, and immediately, a rooster crowed.

¶28. Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was early morning. But they did not enter the Praetorium so that they would not be defiled and, so, could eat the Passover.

29. Then, Pilate went out to them and said, “What is the charge you bring against this man?”

30. And they answered and said to him, “If he were not an evildoer, we would not have handed him over to you.”

31. So, Pilate said to them, “You take him and judge him by your law.” The Jews said to him, “It is not allowed for us to put anyone to death.”

32. (This happened so that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled which he spoke indicating what kind of death he was about to die.)

¶33. Pilate, therefore, re-entered the Praetorium and called Jesus, and he said to him, “You? You are the king of the Jews?”

34. Jesus answered him, “Do you say this on your own, or have others talked to you about me?”

35. Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own people and the high priest have turned you over to me. What did you do?”

36. Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my officers would have fought so that I wouldn’t be handed over to the Jews. But now, my kingdom is not from here.”

37. Pilate therefore said to him, “So then, you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You are saying it because I am a king. For this purpose I have been born, and for this purpose I came into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice.”

38. Pilate said to him, “What is truth?”

¶And after saying this, he went out again to the Jews and told them, “I, myself, find not one basis for a charge against him.

39. But it is your custom that I release one person to you during Passover. So, do you want me to release to you ‘the king of the Jews’?”

40. Then they all cried out again, saying, “Not this man, but Barabbas.” Now Barabbas was a bandit.

¶1. So, Pilate then took Jesus and scourged him.

2. And when the soldiers had woven a crown of thorns, they placed it on his head, and dressed him in a purple garment,

3. and they began saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!”, and they were slapping his face.

4. Then again, Pilate went out and said to them, “Behold, I bring him out to you, that you may know that in him I find not one basis for a charge.”

5. Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment. And Pilate said to them, “Behold, the man!”

6. But when the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, saying, “Crucify! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “You take him yourselves and crucify him; I find no basis for a charge against him.”

7. The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to our law, he ought to die because he made himself out to be a son of God.”

8. Now, when Pilate heard this statement, he was more afraid,

9. and he went into the Praetorium again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus did not give him an answer.

10. Therefore, Pilate said to him, “You do not speak to me? Do you not understand that I have authority to crucify you, and I have authority to release you?”

11. Jesus answered, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it was given to you from above. This is why the man who turned me over to you has the greater sin.”

12. From that moment, Pilate sought to release him. But the Jews cried out, saying, “If you release this man, you are not a friend of Caesar! Every man who makes himself king opposes Caesar!”

13. Now, after Pilate heard this saying, he led Jesus outside and sat on the judicial bench in the place called “Lithostrotos”[17] (but in Hebrew, “Gabbatha”).

14. Now, it was the Preparation for the Passover, about the sixth hour[18], and he said to the Jews, “Behold, your king!”

15. But they cried out, “Away with him! Away! Crucify him.” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your king?” The high priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar!”

16. So, he then handed him over to them to be crucified.

¶And they took Jesus, and led him away.

17. And bearing his cross, he went out to the place called “The Place of a Skull”, which is called in Hebrew, “Golgotha”,

18. where they crucified him, and two others with him, on the right and on the left, and Jesus in the middle.

19. Pilate also wrote a title and fixed it on the cross, and it was written, “Jesus the Nazarite, the King of the Jews.”

20. And many of the Jews read this title because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.

21. The chief priests of the Jews therefore said to Pilate, “Do not write ‘King of the Jews’, but that, ‘He said, I am King of the Jews.’ ”

22. Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

¶23. Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, also the tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven from the top throughout the whole.

24. So they said to one another, “Let’s not divide it, but cast lots for it, whose it will be,” so that the scripture might be fulfilled which said, “They divided my garments among them, and cast lots for my clothing.” And the soldiers did these things.

25. His mother and his mother’s sister stood by Jesus’ cross, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary the Magdalene.

26. And Jesus, seeing his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing there, said to his mother, “Woman, behold your son.”

27. Then he said to the disciple, “Behold your mother.” And from that time, the disciple took her into his own home.

¶28. After this, Jesus, knowing that everything was now finished (so that the scripture might be accomplished), said, “I’m thirsty.”

29. A vessel full of sour wine was sitting there, and so, they soaked a sponge with the sour wine, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it to his mouth.

30. And then, when Jesus received the wine vinegar, he said, “It is finished.” And bowing his head, he gave up the spirit.

¶31. Now, since it was the Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews requested of Pilate that their legs might be broken and they be taken away.

32. Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and of the other who was crucified with him,

33. but when they came to Jesus, they did not break his legs, seeing he was dead already.

34. Nevertheless, one of the soldiers pierced his side with his spear, and blood and water immediately came out.

35. (And he who saw this has borne witness — and his testimony is true, and he knows that he is speaking truthfully — so that you might believe.

36. These things took place so that the scripture might be fulfilled: “Not a bone of his will be broken.”

37. And again, another scripture says, “They shall look upon him whom they pierced.”)

¶38. After these things, Joseph who was from Arimathaea, a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because of fear of the Jews, asked Pilate if he could take away the body of Jesus. And Pilate gave permission. So, he came and took Jesus’ body away.

39. And Nicodemus, who at the first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloe, about one hundred pounds.[19]

40. So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen sheets, with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.

41. Now, there was in the place where he was crucified a garden, and in the garden a new sepulcher in which no man had yet been laid.

42. And since it was the Jews’ Preparation, and the sepulcher was close by, they laid Jesus there.

1. Then, early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary the Magdalene came to the sepulcher and saw that the stone was removed from the sepulcher.

2. So she ran and came to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and she said to them, “They’ve taken the Master out of the sepulcher, and we don’t know where they’ve put him.”

3. Then Peter went out, and the other disciple, and they went to the sepulcher.

4. Now, the two men started out running together, but the other disciple quickly outran Peter and came to the sepulcher first,

5. and bending over to look, he saw the linen cloths lying there, though he did not actually enter.

6. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the sepulcher and saw the linen cloths lying there,

7. and the face cloth that was on his head, not laid with the linen cloths, but folded up in a place by itself.

8. So then the other disciple entered, the one who came to the sepulcher first, and he saw, and believed.

9. (No one yet understood the scripture, that he must rise from the dead.)

10. Then the disciples went away to their own places again.

¶11. But Mary stood outside by the sepulcher weeping, and as she wept, she bent over to look into the sepulcher,

12. and she saw two angels in white sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the foot.

13. And they said to her, “Woman, why are you crying?” She said to them, “They’ve taken my Master away, and I don’t know where they’ve put him.”

14. And when she had said these things, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but did not know that it was Jesus.

15. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who are you looking for?” She, assuming that he was the gardener, said to him, “Sir, if you have removed him, tell me where you put him, and I will take him away.”

16. Jesus said to her, “Mary.” And turning around, she said to him, “Rabbi!” (which means “Teacher”).

17. Jesus said to her, “Don’t cling to me, for I haven’t yet ascended to my Father, but go to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, and to my God and your God.’”

18. Mary the Magdalene went and reported to the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and he had said these things to her.

¶19. When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, although the doors were locked where the disciples were gathered because of fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst and said to them, “Peace to you.”

20. And after he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced at seeing the Lord.

21. Then Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you. As the Father has sent me, so am I sending you.”

22. And after he said this, he breathed out and said to them, “Receive the holy Spirit.

23. If you forgive anyone’s sins, they are forgiven them. If you retain anyone’s sins, they are retained.”

¶24. But one of the twelve, Thomas, who is called “Twin”, was not with them when Jesus came.

25. Therefore, the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Master!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and stick my finger into the mark of the nails, and stick my hand into his side, I will never believe.”

¶26. Eight days later, his disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being locked, and stood in the midst and said, “Peace to you.”

27. Then he said to Thomas, “Bring your finger here, and behold my hands, and bring your hand and stick it into my side. And don’t be faithless, but have faith.”

28. Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

29. Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed? Blessed are they who have not seen and yet believe.”

¶30. To be sure, Jesus also performed many other miracles in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book.

31. But these things are written so that you might believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that believing, you might have life in his name.

¶1. After these things, Jesus showed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias, and this is how he showed himself:

2. Simon Peter, and Thomas, who is called “Twin”, and Nathaniel who was of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples were together.

3. Simon Peter said to them, “I’m going fishing.” And they said to him, “We’re coming with you, too.” They went out immediately, and boarded the boat, and that night, they caught nothing.

4. And just as daybreak was coming, Jesus stood on the shore, though the disciples did not know it was Jesus.

5. Then Jesus said to them, “Children, you don’t have anything to eat, do you?” They answered him, “No.”

6. Then he said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and you’ll find something.” So they cast it, and now they were not strong enough to haul it in because of the multitude of fish.

7. Then that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Master!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Master, he tied on his coat, for he was naked, and threw himself into the sea.

8. But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from land, but only about two hundred cubits[20]), dragging the net full of fish.

9. Then, as they disembarked onto shore, they saw a coal fire laid, and a fish laid on it, and bread.

10. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you just caught.”

11. Simon Peter came up and dragged the net onto land, filled with one hundred and fifty-three large fish, and although there were so many, the net was not torn.

12. Jesus said to them, “Come and dine.” And knowing that it was the Lord, not one of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?”

13. So, Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish.

14. (This was now the third time Jesus was seen by his disciples after he was raised from the dead.)

¶15. Then, when they had eaten, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Master. You know that I am your friend.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.”

16. Again, he said to him a second time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Master. You know that I am your friend.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.”

17. The third time, he said to him, “Simon, son of Jonah, are you my friend?” Peter was grieved because the third time he said to him, “Are you my friend?” And he said to him, “Master, you know everything; you know that I am your friend.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.”

18. Truly, truly, I tell you, when you were young, you dressed yourself and went where you wanted, but when you grow old, you’ll stretch out your hands and another will dress you, and will carry you where you don’t won’t to go.”

19. (He said this indicating by what kind of death he would glorify God.) And after he said this, he told him, “Follow me.”

20. Then, when Peter turned around, he saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also leaned on his chest during the supper and said, “Master, who is the one who will betray you?”

21. When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Master, what about this him?”

22. Jesus said to him, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is it to you? You follow me.”

23. Then this rumor spread among the brothers, that that disciple would not die. But Jesus did not tell him that he would not die; rather, he said, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is it to you?”

¶24. This is the disciple who is testifying about these things and wrote these things, and we know that his testimony is true.

¶25. There are also a great many other things Jesus did which, if each one were written, I suppose that not even the world itself could contain the books which would be written. Amen.
