Thought for the Evening
"COME!" NOT "GO!"
Whenever God calls a person, He calls him to Himself. He is not calling him to an organization, nor to a doctrine, and certainly not to any ceremony. It is extremely important that we know this:
I have seen sincere people, upon feeling the convicting call of God, go "join a church" or go enroll in a seminary, or go become a nun. But God never calls anybody to go join anything or to go become anything; all those kinds of decisions are made in the flesh, through ignorance. Whenever God calls, He says, "Come!" not "Go!" because what He is doing is calling us to Himself.
Secondly, it is extremely important to know, as Paul plainly taught (Eph. 2:18), that access to God is possible only by the Spirit. There is no other way for us to get to God but by His Spirit.
So, if when God calls us, He calls us to Himself, and if our only access to God is through the Spirit, we can say without any fear of contradiction that when God calls us, He is calling us to repent and to receive His Spirit!
This is what Preacher Clark meant when, during that wintry Sunday afternoon prayer meeting, he made this strong point: "God has never called any person except to receive the holy Ghost."
